Pending Delete Domain: What You Can Do During the Final 5 Days

Pending delete is the final five-day stage before a .com registration is purged from the registry. The former owner can no longer renew or restore it through the normal process. A new buyer cannot register it yet either.

The only useful work now is preparation: choose a backorder for a competitive name, or be ready to register an ordinary name after it becomes available.

What the status actually means

The pendingDelete status appears after the 30-day redemption period ends without a successful restore. The registry locks the registration against updates, renewal, transfer, and restoration while it waits for deletion.

Calling the registrar is still sensible if the status seems wrong or recently changed, but there is no standard last-minute payment that reverses a true pending delete status. Claims that someone can renew it normally during this stage should be treated with caution.

Choose between a backorder and an alert

The distinction is mechanical. A backorder service attempts the registration for you at the drop. A monitor tells you that availability changed and leaves the registration to you. The monitor is simpler, but it is not a substitute for automated catching when other buyers are competing.

Prepare before the five days end

Do not build your plan around refreshing a registrar search page at a guessed second. Registry deletion happens through automated systems, and professional catchers submit rapid registration attempts. Manual registration is most realistic when no one else cares about the name.

  • Create and verify an account at the registrar you plan to use.
  • Add a current payment method before the alert or drop.
  • Decide whether the domain justifies one or more backorder services.
  • Keep a replacement domain active because the original may be caught by someone else.

What happens after deletion

After the registry purges the old registration, the name can be registered again. If no service catches it, it may appear as available at ordinary registrars. If a catching service wins, the name may go to the person who placed the backorder or to an auction if that service had multiple interested customers.

If another registrant gets it, the old expiration timeline is over. You then face the same choices as with any registered domain: negotiate, wait, use another name, or assess any narrow legal rights with a qualified lawyer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a pending delete .com be restored?

Not through the normal redemption process. The 30-day restore window has ended by the time a .com reaches the final pending delete stage.

Exactly when will a pending delete domain become available?

The stage lasts five calendar days, but a human should not rely on guessing the exact deletion second. Use a backorder for competitive names or an availability alert for lower-demand names.

Does a monitor register the domain for me?

No. Domain Monitor checks every day and sends text and email alerts. You register the domain yourself. A backorder service is designed to attempt the registration for you.
