How Long Until an Expired .com Domain Is Available?

A .com does not become available the day after it expires. There are two different clocks: the registrar's post-expiration process, which varies, and the registry deletion process, which is much more predictable once redemption begins.

A common timeline is about 30 days of registrar renewal grace, about 30 days of redemption, then 5 days of pending delete. But the first stage can be anywhere from 1 to 45 days, and some registrars auction expired names before they ever reach a public drop.

The practical .com lifecycle

This table is a sequence, not a promise that every domain will become publicly available. The registrar may renew the name, the former owner may restore it, or an expired-domain auction process may award it before a normal public registration attempt.

StageTypical durationWhat the former owner can do
Expired at registrarVaries, often about 30 daysRenew under the registrar's policy

Pending delete5 daysNo direct recovery action

Why the expiration date does not reveal the drop date

The expiration date tells you when the paid registration term ended. It does not tell you when the registrar will delete the registration. ICANN allows registrars to offer different post-expiration renewal windows, and the registrar's terms control what happens during that period.

The useful countdown begins when the registry status shows redemptionPeriod. That stage lasts 30 days. After it changes to pendingDelete, the remaining registry stage is five days.

How to check where the domain is now

A registrar parking page may appear during the renewal window, and a blank website may appear during redemption. Neither gives you the precise lifecycle stage. RDAP status and the registrar account are the better sources.

  • Search the domain in the ICANN registration data lookup.
  • Record the registrar and current status values.
  • If you are the former owner, check the registrar account and contact support.
  • Recheck the status instead of counting only from the expiration date.

What to prepare before the drop

If the name reaches pending delete, decide how much competition you expect. Short words, commercial terms, established traffic, and backlink history attract professional buyers. Those names need a backorder strategy because automated systems can attempt registration faster than a person.

For an ordinary personal name with little outside value, you may choose to monitor availability and keep a registrar account ready. An alert does not reserve or register the name, so you still need to act when it arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an expired domain available immediately?

No. A .com usually remains registered through a registrar-controlled post-expiration period, then 30 days of redemption, then 5 days of pending delete before deletion.

Why is the domain still registered after its expiration date?

The registry may auto-renew it temporarily while the registrar gives the former registrant time to pay. The public expiration date alone does not mean a new buyer can register the name.

Will every expired .com eventually drop?

No. The former owner can renew or restore it, and registrar auctions or other expiry processes may transfer control without a normal public drop.
