pendingUpdate: What This Domain Status Means

pendingUpdate means a request to update the domain has been received by the registry and is being processed. Updates cover changes to the domain object — nameservers, contacts, statuses.

Most registries process updates instantly, so this code is uncommon and usually momentary when it appears.

What pendingUpdate means

An update command is in the registry's queue rather than committed. Registries with validation steps — verifying new contact data, checking nameserver requirements, or manually reviewing certain changes — hold the domain in pendingUpdate until processing finishes. While pending, the requested change hasn't taken effect yet.

It matters most for nameserver changes: if you're migrating DNS and see pendingUpdate, the old delegation is still live until the code clears.

Is it good or bad news?

If you (or your registrar, at your request) made a change: routine. Give it time to process and verify the change landed.

ICANN flags the other case plainly: if you did not request an update to your domain, contact your registrar immediately to resolve the issue. An update you didn't make — especially a nameserver change — is a hijacking vector: an attacker doesn't need to transfer a domain to steal its traffic and email, just to repoint it.

What to do about it

  • Expected update: wait for processing, then confirm in RDAP that the new values (nameservers, contacts) are live.
  • Update stuck for more than a day: ask your registrar whether the registry needs documentation or validation.
  • Unexpected update: contact your registrar immediately, have them identify and cancel the change if possible, and rotate your account credentials.
  • Prevent the unexpected case: keep clientUpdateProhibited enabled between legitimate changes, and enable two-factor authentication on your registrar account.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does pendingUpdate take to clear?

Usually minutes to hours — it depends on the registry's processing and any validation steps. If it persists beyond a day, contact your registrar to find out what the registry is waiting on.

I didn't request any update — should I worry about pendingUpdate?

Yes, treat it seriously. ICANN advises contacting your registrar immediately. An unrequested update can mean a compromised registrar account attempting to repoint your nameservers, which hijacks traffic without transferring the domain.
