TLD (Top-Level Domain)

A TLD (top-level domain) is the final label of a domain name — the part after the last dot, like .com, .ai, or .io. Every TLD is operated by a registry with its own pricing, policies, and lifecycle rules, which is why the same second-level string can cost $10 a year in one TLD and hundreds in another.

The main TLD categories

  • gTLDs (generic): .com, .net, .org and the post-2012 new gTLDs like .app and .xyz — all under ICANN contract with standardized lifecycle rules.
  • ccTLDs (country code): two-letter TLDs like .ai (Anguilla), .io, and .de — each run under its own national policy, not ICANN's gTLD rules.
  • Sponsored/restricted TLDs: names like .gov and .edu with eligibility requirements.

Why TLD choice matters to investors

The TLD determines your renewal cost, your lifecycle safety net, and much of your liquidity. .com remains the deepest aftermarket; ccTLDs like .ai carry higher renewal costs and registry-specific rules. Before holding a name long-term, know the TLD's renewal price trajectory and its expiry behavior — not all TLDs give you a redemption window.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many TLDs exist?

Well over a thousand. The root zone includes the legacy gTLDs, roughly 300 ccTLDs and their internationalized equivalents, and the large wave of new gTLDs delegated since 2013.

Do all TLDs follow the same expiration rules?

No. gTLDs follow ICANN's lifecycle (registrar grace, ~30-day redemption, 5-day pendingDelete). ccTLDs set their own rules — some delete quickly with no redemption period, so check the specific TLD before relying on a grace window.
