Registrant: The Legal Holder of a Domain

The registrant is the person or legal entity that holds a domain registration — the owner of record in the registry's database. Whoever is listed as registrant controls the domain: they can renew it, transfer it, sell it, or let it expire. Registrar accounts, billing contacts, and technical contacts are all secondary to the registrant record.

Registrant vs. registrar vs. registry

Three Rs, three roles: the registrant owns the registration, the registrar manages it as the retail intermediary, and the registry operates the TLD database it lives in. Disputes over who controls a domain almost always come down to who the registrant of record is — not whose credit card paid for it or whose registrar account it sits in.

Why the registrant record matters for investors

  • Registrant data (or its privacy-redacted placeholder) is what buyers and escrow services check to verify a seller actually controls a name.
  • Changing the registrant can trigger a 60-day transfer lock at many registrars under ICANN's change-of-registrant rules — plan around it before a sale.
  • Keep registrant email addresses current: registry and registrar notices go there, including expiry and transfer-approval emails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the registrant the same as the domain owner?

Functionally yes. Domains are registrations rather than property in the traditional sense, but the registrant is the party with the rights to use, renew, transfer, and sell the name.

Why does WHOIS show a privacy service instead of me?

If WHOIS privacy is enabled, the public record shows the proxy service's details in place of yours. You are still the registrant; the underlying data is held by the registrar and disclosed only in limited circumstances.
